Grant Guidelines

The Wolf Kahn Foundation grants program funds a small number of 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that support artists, arts education, art for social justice, and environmental art. The Foundation supports projects that advance artists’ careers, educate youth and the public, or that express or advance social justice or environmental awareness through the arts. General operating support for organizations that carry out these priorities will also be considered. Organizations and projects that fit the above guidelines are invited to submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI). After a review, the Foundation will invite applications from those who best meet the criteria. Grants are usually in the range of $5,000 to $15,000.

Eligibility

  • In general, we fund organizations and projects in New England and New York, or in locations where Wolf Kahn had significant affiliation. We are not able to fund organizations located outside the United States.
  • In general, we fund visual arts programs, or the visual arts component of projects focused on other disciplines.
  • In general, we do not fund academic journals, archives, or endowments. Preference is given for projects and activities that directly support an organization’s mission.

Application Process

The next deadline for Letters of Inquiry is January 12, 2024. The LOI application form will open on December 1, 2023 via Submittable. The LOI form will ask:

  • What does your organization propose and why?*
  • How does your organization demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion?*
  • When would the support requested need to begin? (Those invited to apply will receive a decision by the first week in May 2024.)
  • Please include a preliminary one-page budget, a copy of your IRS letter of tax-exemption, and a link to your website.

    *Recommended response length for each question is approximately 500 words.

After submitting a Letter of Inquiry, selected organizations will be invited to apply via Submittable (Deadline: March 8, 2024). The application will ask:

  • What is the goal for the grant requested? What needs will the grant address?*
  • How does your organization pursue diversity, equity, and inclusion? What has been successful in achieving the results you seek?*
  • How will your organization carry out the purpose of the grant?*
  • How will you measure the effectiveness of this grant/project?*
  • Please submit a budget for your organization and for the proposed project.

    *Recommended response length for each question is approximately 250 words.

LOIs and applications will be reviewed by the Foundation Grants Committee. The review process will consider:

  • The degree to which the project fits the Foundation’s areas of funding;
  • The degree that the grant will have an impact on the organization;
  • The organization’s ability to carry out its stated purpose;
  • The organization’s demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • The organization’s previous affiliation with Wolf Kahn or the Wolf Kahn | Emily Mason Foundation.

Applicants will be notified whether their proposals are accepted by the first week in May 2024.
